The Simmons Surgical Society was founded in 1979 by a group of spine surgeons
who had trained under Dr. Edward H. Simmons. When the former fellows
announced to Dr. Simmons their plan, he applauded the concept but objected to
the name. In spite of his protests, the Simmons Surgical Society retained its
name and was born. Dr. Stewart Bailey served as the first president of the
society. The goal of the society was to create a forum for fellowship and
the dissemination of knowledge about spine surgery. Membership was originally
limited to those surgeons who had trained under Dr. Simmons. The society
meets annually at various locations around the country and these meetings
afford the members an opportunity for academic stimulation and to renew old
friendships. All attendees are encouraged to make presentations or bring
cases for discussion. The Talking Proud award is given each year to the presenter of the paper which the other attendees feel is best presentation and contributes most to their practice.
